For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2
Romans 8:2 continues what Paul was saying in Romans 8:1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Paul describes in Romans how our flesh (carnal mind, flesh) wars against our inward man (our soul, conscience). For example, let's say your flesh (carnal mind) wants you to do something to get high because you are stressed from work rather than turn it over to God and rest in Him. You know that it is wrong to abuse a substance to get high but you are more familiar with using that to relax and destress than you are giving your cares to the Lord and resting in Him. So your carnal mind wrestles with your soul mind or conscience because you know what the right choice is but you are contemplating getting high because you think it is easier and quicker. When you realize that this is going on you can begin training your thoughts. God will always provide a way for your to resist temptation. Being set free from the law of sih and death does not give you a free pass to sin but what it does give you is an open relationship with the father who when you repent from your sin will forgive you. Studying the bible and learning the scriptures and how to apply them to your particular situations will build you up spiritually and help you to make better decisions and settle into healthy habits like studying the bible every day, praying and praising often throughout the day and trusting God so that rather than stressing out you are resting in him.
I tried for seven years to quit smoking before I finally gave it to God. I had to decide that I no longer wanted to smoke and I had to break the chain of self condemnation and accept who I am as a child of God and realize how powerful and loving He is and how much He loves me and is for me and then I could let go of my dependency on it. When I did that and asked Him to take the desire and physical need to smoke away from me without me going through withdraw and having any side effects He did. I didn't have any withdrawal symptoms. In my mind the thought came to me that I wanted to smoke. But I answered that thought and said, "No I don't. I don't want to smoke" and the thought would go away. At different times that thought has crossed my mind but as soon as I thought it I stopped it by saying, 'No I don't. I don't want to smoke." I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me and you can too. (Philippians 4:13)
Pray, study the bible, find a church if you don't have one, watch preaching on tv, listen to gospel music, fellowship with other believers, start a prayer journal; learn the Word of God to strengthen your spirit, to strengthen your faith, and to strengthen your relationship with God. Communicate with Him. He is the best friend that you will ever have. He will never leave you nor forsake you. His love is true.
Study to shew thyself approved upto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
